About the Course
Students and faculty from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications traveled to Moscow and Sochi, Russia, for a two-week mobile news and advertising class in May 2011.
Dean Gary Kebbel, and advertising and public relations faculty members Amy Struthers, Luis Peon-Casanova and Adam Wagler, lead the class. UNL worked with two universities: Moscow State University and the State University for Tourism and Research on the Sochi campus.
"The class is designed to bring together global media challenges and entrepreneurs like Alexander Zolotarev," Dean Kebbel said, "Our students will get real-world experience in solving media issues in 21st century media." Zolotarev, who became the J school's first Innovator in Residence, visited Lincoln last summer through the program launched by Dean Kebbel to expand UNL's international presence.
Zolotarev won a Knight News Challenge digital news innovation award in 2008 to create and launch a website, SochiReporter.ru. As the first site of its kind, it will be used as a model for future Olympics hosts. Zolotarev and UNL students brainstormed solutions to make SochiReporter sustainable after the Knight grant money runs out.
Zolotarev, a member of Moscow State University, will teach a multimedia workshop during the first leg of the trip. The skills learned in Moscow will be put into practice in Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, during the second leg of the trip. UNL students will work with SUTR faculty to create advertising, public relations and journalism content for distribution via SochiReporter and mobile devices.
SUTR, a recognized leader in hospitality training, will provide research to aid in the creation of content for distribution. SUTR offers its 12,000 students programs of study in tourism, engineering and ecology, economics, social studies, law, information technologies and mathematics, and physical training.
