Jordon is a 16-year-old troublemaker. She's not even old enough to drive, and she's already run off the reservation and had a run-in with the cops. She covers her mouth when she smiles but lets tears come openly. She knows the problems of the reservation: not enough things to do, too much suicide and too many broken-up families. But she won't let any of that stop her from looking toward her future.

I like...

...Chinese food because I always get the three-entree dish and I’m always getting orange chicken or sesame chicken with the rice and noodles.

...play volleyball.

...to hang with my family and friends because they make me laugh when I’m sad. ...to drink Dr. Pepper.

...to drive around and listen to “Bedrock” by L’il Wayne.

...to get on the computer and chat online with my friends.

...to go shopping in JC Penney's.

I hate...

...all the drama that goes on down here on this little rez because it gets old.

...my life because it sucks that my family ain't together and I miss a lot of my family members that I have lost.

...when people try to be better than you or try to act all that.

...when the boys mock you or copy what you’re saying.

...onions because they stink and they are really gross.

...when people go through my phone and look at my things I don't want them to look at or if I tell them to not to they do it anyways.

What I want

Well what happened in my life that is important is when my family was still together and happy but now that my parents have split up they both have moved on and got new people in their lives, but sometimes I do wish they could leave all that behind and get back together. The other thing I miss about in my life is all the family I have lost from suicide or being sick. Me and my older brother both live with one of our family members from my mom’s side and my mom has the other three youngest ones, but my dad – he hardly comes around and visits us because he lives in Bonesteel and he comes and gets us on weekends sometimes to go stay with him or on, like, thanksgiving and stuff he will bring us stuff or bring us money. I also wished that my younger cousins that lost their mom not too long ago didn't have to go through that at a very young age because I know they miss her a lot and my grandpa I feel bad for too because this is his second wife he had that has passed away on him but he is hanging in there and he also goes out a lot which ain't good. I also think he needs to spend a lot more time with his kids on weekends, like go out and eat dinner at a restaurant or go to the movies.

Where I see myself in five years

Well, five years from now I will probably be in Miami going to college to become a nurse. That's what I’m planning on going when I graduate from high school because I ain't planning on staying down here on this rez forever with all the drama. But yeah, this is what I’m planning on doing.

About these essays

During the interviews, the girls also participated in a short writing exercise with University of Nebraksa-Lincoln journalism professor Scott Winter. These are their unedited words from that session. Their prompts ranged from what the like and hate, to their most devastating moment and where they picture themselves in five years.
